It is a French multinational company which is a producer, processor and distributor of construction and high-performance materials and packaging. It has its four business activities such as: Innovative Materials which include the manufacture and distribution of flat glass, used in the automobile, construction and other sectors as well as the production of high-performance material, such as ceramics, plastics and abrasives, among others. The company operates worldwide through the subsidiaries Saint-Gobain Sanitaire Chauffage, Lapeyre, among others.
History
The company was founded in October 1665 in Paris and headquartered on the outskirts of Paris, at La Defense and in Courbevoie. The company had the informal name Compagnie du Noyer from the beneficiary of the monopoly granted to it, the financier Nicolas du Noyer, a receveur of taxes of Orleans, was created for a period of twenty years and would be franked in part by the State. The company established a subsidiary to make the sodium carbonate (soda) that it needed to make glass, using the then revolutionary Leblanc process, in 1806. That was its first venture into the chemical industry. The company invested heavily in its new plant, the Soudiere de Chauny from 1820 to 1835.
From 1982-1986 Bull, government authorities decided, would be more useful in another organization, and was sold. During its brief spell under government control the company motioned towards the corporate sector, public works or downstream services, but political and economic circumstances foiled its attempts. In 1986 the company spent the bulk of the first decade striving to restore sustainable and profitable growth, and to establish worldwide leadership, across its business lines.
Company’s Markets
Saint-Gobain has now defined itself with regard to the habitat and construction markets, in the broadest sense, having states its new ambition which is to become world leader on the habitat and construction markets. It is providing innovative solutions to the key challenges of its age: growth, energy and the environment. The immense potential of this sector certainly offers the company opportunities for developing its different activities.
