The company is involved in the business of network access and telecommunications services in the Nordic region, the Baltic States and emerging markets in Eurasia, including Russia and Turkey and in Spain. It has operations in other countries in Northern, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, South Asia and Spain. The company is headquartered in Stockholm. It operates into three businesses areas. The Mobility Services business area offers mobility services to the consumer and enterprise markets. The offering includes mobile voice and content, Wireless Local Area network hotspots, mobile broadband and Wireless Offices. The Broadband Services business area provides services for connecting homes and offices.
History
The company was founded in 1853. It was the first time when two previous incumbents in two EU countries merged. Today TeliaSonera is the fifth largest telecom operator in Europe and continues building on its pioneering spirit and high technology expertise within both fixed and mobile communications inherited from its predecessors.
Telia Company has a history as a state telephone monopoly, before privatization. On the other hand Sonera is used to have monopoly only on trunk network calls, while most of local telecommunication was provided by telephone cooperatives. The brand names Telia and Sonera have continued to be used in the Swedish and Finnish markets respectively. TeliaSonera is the result of a 2002 merger between the Swedish and Finnish telecommunications companies.
In the starting of 2008, The Company announced measures to save nearly 500 million Euros which would include 2900 redundancies: 2000 from Sweden and 900 from Finland. The company Orange S.A. proposed a 33 billion Euro acquisition offer for TeliaSonera on June 5, 2008, which was rejected by the board of the Company.

In May 2013 it secured 800 Megahertz (MHz) spectrum in Estonia. In June 2013 the company acquired the fiber network in the municipality of Lindesberg.
